“Awhile back I was interviewing John Hiatt on my radio show and we realized that we had known each other for fifty years. I met John in 1975, my first full year in Nashville and it occurred to me that the oldest songs that I still play (there are 3) were written that year. Now, I live to follow creative rabbits down holes and I’m old enough, now, that the idea of legacy comes up now and then, so, I decided that a more or less chronological live songbook might make for an interesting evening of music.”

A protege oflegendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storytellerin his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, WaylonJennings, Joan Baez,Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders, and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his record,Guitar Town, which shot to number one on the country charts and is now regarded as a classicof the Americana genre.Most recently, Earle’s 1988hitCopperhead Roadwas made an officialstate song of Tennessee in 2023.Subsequent releases likeThe Revolution Starts…Now(2004),Washington Square Serenade(2007), andTOWNES(2009) received consecutive GRAMMY® Awards.Jerry Jeff, released in2022,consisted of Earle’s versions of songs written by Jerry Jeff Walker,one ofhismentors.Earle has published both a novelI’ll Never Get OutofThis World Alive(Houghton MifflinHarcourt2011)andDog House Roses, acollection of short stories(Houghton Mifflin2003).Earle produced albums for other artists such as Joan Baez (Day After Tomorrow)and LucindaWilliams (Car WheelsonA Gravel Road)As an actor,Earle has appeared in several films andhad recurringroles in the HBO seriesTheWireandTremé.In 2009, Earle appeared in the off-Broadway playSamara, for which he alsowrote a score thatThe New York Timesdescribed as “exquisitely subliminal.” Earle wrote musicfor and appeared inCoal Country, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award.Earle isthe host of the weekly showHard CoreTroubadouron Sirius Radio’s Outlaw Country channel.In 2020,Earle was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.And in 2023, Steve washonored by theBruce Springsteen Archives&Center for American Music.
